In time, Wimbledon developed from a settlement into a thriving village and kept on going. The area has been home to more than one wealthy family. Such families owned most of the estate and land in the area and frequently changed ownership of the Wimbledon Manor House over the centuries amongst themselves. The locale was developed actively during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, much like other parts of the city of London. Although things were looking good, the local commercial scene struggled during the second half of the twentieth century. The problem that led to this unpleasant situation was the lack of large size real estate that was available for redevelopment by major stores and companies. Today, the area is economically sound and makes good profit of the tennis championships staged there every year. Real estate prices and local business profits indicate that the area is doing well.
